It has a back shell (carapace) that tends to be highly rounded and a hinged belly armor (plastron) that can be opened and closed to hide its head and legs completely. This turtle is dark brown to yellowish brown. Some species have bright yellow, black, orange or white lines along their keels. In general, the body is multi-colored and dense. Most of these species have stripes on both sides of the head that usually meet towards the nose. Male turtles have a plastron that curves inwards.
