Concentrated in freshwater areas of the southeastern United States. It is found from the Florida Panhandle west to east Texas, north to southeast Kansas, Missouri, southeast Iowa, western Illinois, southern Indiana, western Kentucky, Louisiana and western Tennessee. Typically, only nesting females venture out into the open.

Habitat:

Canopy shade, overhanging trees, shrubs, dead sunken trees.

In general, it will eat almost anything it can catch. The ability of this species to catch fish and therefore reduce fish populations is admired by fishermen, when in fact it targets any prey that is numerous and easy to catch, and rarely leaves any widespread harm to fish populations.
